We’re Not Married?

More About “We’re Not Married?” The Movie:

It is the people who are closest to us that often affect us the most, for better or worse.

Through the lives of two distinct couples who become illegally married by a kind but fraudulent reverend, each must decide if the whirlwind of life over the past ten years is worth the trouble of staying together and renewing their vows.

Through the lenses of two men and two women, we are granted the unique perspective of what it’s like to navigate the marital waters with partners of different personalities, priorities, and pet peeves.

We’re Not Married? is a powerful 100-page manuscript that takes a realistic but lighthearted stance on issues such as unfaithful wives, therapy, friends, motherhood, immaturity, betrayal, lies, sickness, fraud, family, and fun, and emphasizes the human ability to overcome obstacles, forgive, grow, and move on for the greater good.

As life’s inevitable events unfold, we change for better or worse. Whether sickness or addictions, lies or affairs, people are going through things, often in secrecy until they come to light; and when it comes to marriage, couples are either growing together or growing apart.

The events and characters in this story are relatable to people across the globe; we can and will get through whatever storms we may be facing, individually and as couples.

Life is not always about making the right decision but about making a decision and then making it right.

Behind The Scenes

Why Rae Wrote The Movie

When Tom Nelson brought me the story of three couples who get married on a whim and then ten years later find out it wasn't real because of the fraudulent reverend who married them, I was blown away. Not only was it funny, which is perfect because I love comedy and making others laugh, but also because it resonated with something that really happened in my life.

In 2013 I had the great idea to quit my job as a public school teacher of students with special needs, sell my car, give up my Culver City apartment and travel the world. I was going full nomad. I stashed two large suitcases under a bed in my mother's Brooklyn apartment and essentially went backpacking. My first stop was Kenya, in Africa, to live with the Masai for four months. Now maybe that shouldn't have been the first stop on my journey but it turned out to be one of the most significant.

  • Living in a remote village with camels, cows, and even elephants, no running water and no electricity proved to be difficult until I met a tall, dark, handsome Masai man, five years my junior, who was business savvy with a lot of great ideas. And guess what, I married him, ceremonially speaking.

We built a house on his newly unlocked 8 acres of land and the month before we were supposed to go down to the courthouse to get everything legalized, the mall bombing in Nairobi took place and the Kenyan government told all foreigners to leave, even the missionaries. I had to be gone within two weeks, and though I was able to get a short extension to get my affairs in order, it wasn't long enough to get married.

I left that little village, the land, and the man. I know all too well about marriage not being what you thought it was and so we're not married comes from my experience and my heart.

Author’s Note

“There is a continuously growing need for diversity in film and literature, not just of writers but also of the characters and storyline. We’re Not Married is written by a woman who is Trinidadian-, African-, and Native-American who has lived in all of the featured cities and has experienced parts of each of the main female characters’ lives including being and seeing a psychiatrist both individually and with a spouse, being a homemaker, teacher, writer, and personal assistant, getting married and divorced, motherhood, friendship, miscarriage, being in the hospital, and traversing the troubled waters of infidelity. I am the perfect person to write this story because I either know, am, or have been every one of the characters in the events taking place in their lives. The ethnic assortment of characters’ lives paralleling and crisscrossing each other creates opportunities to recognize the similarities across various cultures.”
